Media Release – 25 March 2011

Canberra’s nationally award winning markets, the Old Bus Depot Markets, is clicking its knitting needles in anticipation of its special annual event, A Celebration of Wool, to be held on Sunday 15 May.

Now in its sixteenth year at the markets, this spectacular event showcases top quality Australian made wool products from around the country.

“A Celebration of Wool is eagerly awaited by people who knit, felt, and love to work with wool,” said Old Bus Depot Markets co-founder, Diane Hinds.

“Here in Canberra we’re right in the middle of a wool growing area so we’ve got many talented people who work with wool.  Craftspeople also come from NSW, Victoria, and South Australia to participate in and showcase their quality Australian made wool products, many made on their own properties,” she continued.

The markets will feature products of the finest quality including hand felted garments and accessories, designer knitwear, millinery, weavings, funky beanies and farm label knitwear. The fantastic range of specialist yarns are always a huge drawcard for knitters and include hand carded and hand dyed yarns, natural yarns and Wensleydale yarns. Regional Guilds will also provide demonstrations of hand spinning, hand felting, and other traditional wool based crafts.

This year’s stallholders include Michelle Snowdon, an indie yarn-maker & fibre artist who creates exquisite wearable textile art. One of a kind designs are created from thread to fabric following the Slow Cloth approach to artisan craft design, a process-based ethos honouring textile tradition as well as embracing innovation. Local wool and natural fibres are gathered from Australian wool-growers and then artfully dyed, spun & skilfully crafted into unique gifts using a fusion of ancient and modern hand-spinning techniques.  Michelle’s latest freestyle designs are made into individual scarves, beanies and a range of textile jewellery.

Other stallholders will have felted bags, beanies galore, wool quilts and bedding, mittens, Fez hats, and fine woollen undergarments – and all just in time for winter!

A Celebration of Wool at the Old Bus Depot Markets will be open from 10am to 4pm on Sunday 15 May and entry is free.  For more information visit www.obdm.com.au
