Canberra’s Capital Region Farmers Market is bringing the buzz back to Exhibition Park this May, with a World Bee Day celebration that puts local beekeepers, honey producers and the importance of bees and other pollinators front and centre for one very special Saturday morning.

World Bee Day is recognised globally on 20 May each year. The Capital Region Farmers Market is marking the occasion on Saturday 16 May, giving the Canberra community a hands-on, local way to connect with the growers and producers who depend on bees every single season.

“Every year World Bee Day gives us a reason to stop, look around at what’s on our tables, and ask how it all got there,” said Capital Region Farmers Market Manager, Sarah Power.

“The answer, more often than not, is bees. We invite visitors to the Market on 16 May, to come and meet the beekeepers and producers who work alongside these incredible insects every day, and leave with a real appreciation for what goes into the food they buy here each week,” Sarah continued.

Visitors will have the chance to meet working beekeepers on site, sample honey and honey-themed products from local producers and take part in kids’ activities designed to spark a love of nature in the next generation of Market shoppers.

ABC Radio Canberra will also be broadcasting live from the Market, bringing the stories of the day to listeners right across the region.

The Rotary Club of Hall, which founded the Market back in 2004 and channels all Market proceeds into community and humanitarian projects, will have a presence on the day through a dedicated Rotary tent providing educational information about bees.

“There is something really special about gathering in the cooler months to celebrate something as small and as powerful as a bee,” Sarah said.

“Autumn at the Market is already a beautiful time, with rich, flavourful seasonal produce and the atmosphere being just that little bit cosier. Adding World Bee Day into that mix makes for a morning that is genuinely hard to beat,” Sarah concluded.
