Media Release – 3 March 2011

As one of the stars of the popular television show ‘The Farmer Wants a Wife’, local Young boy, Farmer Kieran, is proving very capable of using his charm and persuasion with the ladies as each episode unfolds. And he’s used these very same skills to persuade the Channel Nine Getaway crew to visit Young to show what’s so special about the Young Shire.

Young Shire Council’s Tourism Manager, Shannon O’Connor was delighted to see that the link with Farmer Kieran and Young had been capitalised upon through a very popular travel program that is screened nationwide.

“Young is a vibrant and progressive regional centre buzzing with friendly locals, quirky shops, delightful cafes and interesting history. Young truly is the place for an authentic country experience and this is our chance to show the nation what Young has to offer,” said Mr O’Connor.

“As a community we are very grateful to Kieran for taking the time to promote his home town and showcase it in such a positive manner to such a wide audience and we wish him all the very best of success on the show” he continued.

Filming for Getaway occurred at various locations throughout the Young Shire, aided by the generally clear and fine conditions. The Young Visitor Information Centre assisted during the filming of a section of the production on location at the Chinese Tribute Gardens.

The ‘Feel Young, Visit Young’ promotional campaign is now running into its third season and has, in conjunction with many other initiatives undertaken by the Tourism Department of Council, resulted in an increase in visitors to the Information Centre of over 200% over the past two years. Interest in Young is still growing at an excellent rate with an increase in unique visitors to the visityoung.com.au website of over 85% year on year to date.

A broadcast date for the Getaway story featuring Young has not been fixed, however it is believed that April 2011 is likely.
