Media Release – 19 July 2011

The best of Canberra and regional stallholders from the Capital Region Farmers Market were last night recognised at the inaugural Capital Region Farmers Market Stallholder Awards.

“For the past two months we’ve been searching for who the public think are the best stallholders in eight people’s choice categories,” said Farmers Market spokesperson, Clive Badelow.

“We had eight clear standout winners in these categories, plus we were pleased to announce that the best overall stallholder award went to Hillside Orchard,” he continued.

Awards were announced for the best in vegetables; fruit; meat and seafood; baked goods; gourmet, fine foods and smallgoods; flowers, plants and garden; onsite, ready-made meals and food; and dairy and eggs.

The evening was a great success with Deputy Chief Minister, Andrew Barr, addressing the guests about the importance that the role of markets and small producers plays in the economic development of the capital region.

“The Capital Region Farmers Market has reached a level where the produce is wonderful and the market experience is great for our customers each week. Plus there are numerous benefits for the small businesses involved as stallholders,” Mr Badelow said.

“Our awards have also happened at a time when Canberrans’ move to buying local produce is really picking up speed,” he concluded.

The Capital Region Farmers Market in Canberra is a genuine farmers market with over 100 stalls offering a diverse range of fresh food and agricultural produce straight from the producer to the customer. All funds generated from the Market are fed back into local and regional communities and other projects chosen by the Rotary Club of Hall which founded the Market in 2004.
