MEDIA RELEASE – 8 June 2010

Canberra’s nationally award winning markets, the Old Bus Depot Markets, is getting set to host its unique creative theme day, Creative Fibre, to be held on Sunday 11 July.

“Canberra is a region brimming with textile artists who weave, design and make knitted garments, embroider, hand dye fabrics and yarns, make lace and handfelt accessories and homewares to the highest standards,” said Old Bus Depot Markets manager, Diane Hinds.

“There is so much on offer in this field that this year our annual Creative Fibre event promises to be bigger and better than ever before.

“Now in its seventh year, Creative Fibre is an event where visitors can not only enjoy browsing and buying the exquisite range of textile art on offer, but can also speak to the artists about their individual textile specialties and learn about the processes involved,” Ms Hinds continued.

Creative Fibre stallholders will be exhibiting and selling textile jewellery, hand silkscreened textiles, vintage Japanese kimono fabrics, paper quilting, silk and wool felting accessories, handmade rugs, scarves and silk, textile screenprinting, contemporary handspun art yarn and more. The ANU School of Arts, Textile Design, and Megalo Access Arts will also be on hand, along with Canberra Regional Guilds, to demonstrate on the day and be available to answer questions.

Must-sees include the work of Alexandra Gawdan who hand silkscreens textiles and paper and will showcase her homewares including hand screened tea towels, cushions, and bags, and fibre art from Pam de Groot, a fibre artist from the Blue Mountains who combines methods of felting, embroidery and dyeing to create art works, garments and accessories. Robyn Duncan, through her business Canberra Needlework, will also be selling rare books on needlework and hard to find laces.

Located in the Old Bus Depot Building on the Kingston Foreshore, Canberra’s premier indoor markets have a contemporary urban feel and promise a pleasurable experience for locals and tourists alike. The Old Bus Depot Markets are open every Sunday from 10am – 4pm. More information available at www.obdm.com.au
