Media Release – 4 March 2011

Canberra’s popular Saturday morning market, the Capital Region Farmers Market, is proud to announce that some of its market regulars have picked up major awards at the 2011 Sydney Royal Cheese and Dairy Produce Show. The awards were judged early last month with the winners announced on 16 February.

“The Sydney Royal Show award wins again show the high standard of produce that our regular stallholders achieve. They have proven time and time again that they can mix it with the country’s best in cheese and dairy products,” said Farmers Market Spokesperson, Clive Badelow.

Attracting between 900 and 1,000 entries in 130 classes, the Sydney Royal Cheese & Dairy Produce Show hosts the most prestigious and competitive events on the dairy show calendar. As well as butter, milk, cheese and cream, products judged also includes dairy desserts, gelato, ice cream and chocolate

“These awards also show how lucky we are to have these products available each and every week at the Farmers Market,” he continued.

Market regular Robyn Rowe Chocolates was named ‘most successful chocolate exhibitor’ of the awards picking up a gold medal for her creamy white, plus five additional silver medals for several chocolate varieties.

“This year we included chocolates in every category including varieties we haven’t done before. Our award wins are encouragement to continue in business and it’s pleasing to know that people really like the products we make,” said Robyn Rowe.

Other winning market stallholders included Country Valley and Highland Organics who were named ‘most successful milk exhibitor’, collecting two golds and four silver medals, and Lindsay and Edmunds, another market favourite chocolate maker who this year collected three silvers. Cheese makers Small Cow Farm also collected a gold and two silvers for several cheese varieties.

And it’s not just dairy we’re winning awards for. Stallholder Dish It Up was awarded a silver medal at the Royal Sydney Fine Food Show, winning  in the Pasta Category for their 100% Durum Wheat Fresh Pasta.

“Come down to the markets each Saturday and meet these award winning stallholders yourself. Taste and buy the products and you’ll definitely see what all the fuss is about,” concluded Mr Badelow.

The Capital Region Farmers Market in Canberra is a genuine farmers market with over 100 stalls offering a diverse range of fresh food and agricultural produce straight from the producer to the customer.  The Market is open from 8- 11am each Saturday at Exhibition Park in Canberra. All funds generated from the Market are fed back into regional communities and other projects chosen by the Rotary Club of Hall which founded the Market in 2004.
